A proverb is defined at dictionary.com as “a short pithy saying in general use, stating a general truth or piece of advice.”

In my early twenties, I discovered Chinese proverbs and was intrigued by them – “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” I thought this was sound instruction.

Can you believe it was more than a decade before I realized that Christians have their own Proverbs? In fact, an entire book of the Bible is named “Proverbs”!

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Biblical Proverbs are truths and advice given to us by God for our own good; and protection. As parents and guardians, aren’t we doing the exact same when we offer cautionary words of advice to our children as they make decisions or face challenges? I sure try and God’s cautions and promises contained within the Bible lead the way.

Here are a few of my favorites:

“As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.” Proverbs 27:19

“Better is open rebuke than hidden love.” Proverbs 27:5

“Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down.” Proverbs 26:20

“The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.” Proverbs 28:1

“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” Proverbs 28:13

“Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” Proverbs 30:5

“Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.” Proverbs 3:13

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:6

“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7

“The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it.” Proverbs 10:22

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25

From family to finances to protection, there’s a verse for that! God’s word is flawless and we have everything to gain from reading it AND doing what it says.
